Digital Documentation of a Heritage Site

Project Background:

The Hafod Copperworks in Swansea used to be the largest copper-related industrial works in the World. Today the site has all but disappeared, but a few interesting structures remain in the area around the Liberty Stadium.

With funding making restoration and refurbishment of the remaining structures feasible, it was necessary to produce accurate surveys in order for the buildings to be made safe and subsequently restructured.

Project Description:

The project use a combination of close and medium range terrestrial laser scanners to capture 3D data of all visible / accessible parts of the structures. Because safety was a concern in some areas, the remote acquisition methods were ideal.

The structures surveyed included two engine houses, a laboratory and a bascule bridge over the River Tawe. Such was the condition of the bridge, navigation upstream of it was closed.

AutoCAD, Topcon Scanmaster, Faro Scene, Kubit and Pointools were used to generate the deliverables.

Deliverables:

Plan drawings

Ortho elevation photos

3D pointclouds

2D CAD elevations
